Present Continuous (Presente continuo)

Existen 3 formas del presente en inglés: el presente simple (Present Simple), el imperativo (Imperative) y el presente continuo o progresivo (Present Continuous). Vamos a ver este último:

Present Continuous
El presente continuo se forma con el verbo to be + el gerundio del verbo o present participle (-ing).

Ejemplo / Example: I’m watching TV (Estoy viendo la tele)

is /are + -ing / e.g. The horse is running

Como siempre, en inglés se tiende a contraer el sujeto y el verbo, quedando así: I’m writting right now.

FORMACIÓN DEL PRESENT CONTINUOUS

Afirmative: I’m reading right now (Estoy leyendo ahora mismo)
Negative: She isn’t (is not) reading now (Ella no está leyendo ahora)
Interrogative: Are you reading now? (¿Estás (tu) leyendo ahora?)
Negative interrogative: Aren’t you reading now? (No estás tu leyendo ahora?)

USOS DEL PRESENT CONTINUOUS

– El Present Continuous se utiliza para describir acciones que están sucediendo en el momento de hablar o que están cambiando o desarrollándose en el presente:

I’m writting an email to your sister (Estoy escribiendo un email a tu hermana)

My English’s improving (Mi inglés está mejorando)

Don’t disturb her, she’s studying now (No la molestes, está estudiando)

– También puede referirse a acciones o situaciones que son temporales:

I’m helping out in the kitchen until they find a new cooker (Estoy ayudando en la cocina hasta que ellos encuentren un nuevo cocinero)

– Puede utilizarse con los adverbios de tiempo always o forever para describir un hábito que molesta o es irritante para el que lo está describiendo:

Why are you always making so much noise? (¿Por qué siempre haces tanto ruido’)

– El Present Continuous también es a menudo utilizado para expresar planes de futuro:

He’s coming home to dinner with us (El viene a casa a cenar con nosotros)

We’re going to the cinema tomorrow (Vamos al cine mañana)
