Como continuación, hoy vamos a conocer un par de verbos modales más: Should y Ought to. Ambos expresan un ‘obligación suave‘ o mild obligation.
Should and ought to se utilizan habitualmente para dar consejo (give advice) y hacer sugerencias (make suggestions). Su construcción es la siguiente:
Should
Positive (Afirmativa)
I/You/He/She/We/You/they should study more for the exam. It’s quite difficult.
Debería (tendría que) estudiar más para el examen. Es bastante difícil.
Subject + should + verb (infinitive without to)
Como vemos, el verbo modal should no cambia en la tercera persona del singular, al ser un verbo modal.
Negative (Negativa)
You should’t drink so much bear. It’s no good for your health.
No deberías beber tanta cerveza. No es bueno para tu salud.
Subjet + Should + not (shouldn’t)
Question (Interrogativa)
Should I go to the party? I don’t know if she wants me to go.
¿Debería (tendría que) ir a la fiesta? No sé si ella quiere que vaya.
Ought to
La construcción y el significado es el mismo que should. Lo único que en vez de should utilizamos ought to:
Positive
We ought to learn to play an instrument. It’s very rewarding.
Tendríamos que aprender a tocar un instrumento. Es muy gratificante.
Subjet + ought to + verb (infinite without to)
Negative
You ought not to eat so much. You’re gaining weight!
No debieras comer tanto. ¡Estás engordando!
Subject + ought not to + verb (infinitive without to)
Utilizamos preferiblemente Should en vez de Ought to, aunque también podemos utilizarlo en la forma interrogativa:
Ought She to study languages? She’s quite good at them.
¿Debería (ella) estudiar idiomas? Es bastante buena en eso.
